Negative Data September 6, 2006

This quote from the Economist via “Three Quarks Daily”: “The idea is to create a negative database. Instead of containing the information of interest, such a database would contain everything except that information.”  Apparently some computer scientists have been developing such a database for added security.  If a database only contains negative information, and yet is restricted to known classes, then it can effectively shield the information while being publicly available, unless the specifics of the class of data are also generally known or available.  Fun to think about, I suppose, but seems to play havoc with Dr. Codd’s 12 principles . . .
