Three New Planets August 18, 2006

I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out how to come up with a mnemonic to remember planetary order that takes the new planets into consideration.  The one I grew up with was “My very enterprising mother just served us nine pizzas.”  You can add Ceres to the thing by giving Mom a name starting with the letter “c,” but then you are completely stuck.

I was reading my son one of Lemony Snicket’s “Series of Unfortunate Events” novels last night–The Slippery Slope.  A group of kids in it has a pledge “the snow scout alphabet pledge,” that covers consecutively all of the letters of the alphabet.  They promise to be accomodating, basic, calm, . . . etc.  The pledge gets pretty goofy even in the early stages, but when it gets to the letter “x,” it forces them to pledge to be “xylophone.”  Unfortunate events indeed.

Perhaps I will need to restructure the planetary mnemonic quite a bit. . . But it will have to wait for tomorrow, since I am pretty tired.
